Resident Family Christmas Dinner

The Resident Family Christmas Dinner was held on November 18, 2018 and 300 people were served including residents, guests, staff and volunteers. Entertainment was provided by the Doug Oesch Band and enjoyed by everyone. Thank you to the Board members and volunteers for helping making this event successful.

Medical Director Retirement Announcement

Dr. O’Connor announced he is retiring as Medical Director at Blue Water Rest Home effective December 31, 2018 and as Attending Physician effective January 31, 2019. A retirement celebration is being planned in early February 2019 and more information will follow. Dr. Hammond has accepted the Medical Director role and will roster all of Dr. O’Connor’s residents after his departure.

Resident Quality of Life Survey Summary
Each year, we ask our residents who have resided with us for 3 months or longer or their families to provide feedback in the form of our Resident Quality of Life Survey. 
Surveys are completed by residents who are able to understand and respond to the questions being asked, otherwise surveys are sent to their Power of Attorney for completion.  This year (2018), 46/58 surveys were returned for a completion rate of 79%.
Our survey results show that:
1. 89.5% of residents/POAs felt respected when cared for.
2. 92.5% of residents/POAs felt they had enough variety in meals.
3. 92% of residents/POAs replied that they felt safe when they are alone.
4. 95.5% of residents/POAs replied that the staff respects what they like and dislike.
5. 71.5% of residents felt they have enjoyable things to do here on weekends.
6. 97% of residents/POAs would recommend this home to others.

New High/Low Beds

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced that we will receive $6500 to purchase  equipment to assist with falls prevention.  Blue Water Rest Home will be purchasing four new high/low beds with this funding

A Community Flu Shot Clinic will be held at the West Huron Care Centre in the Risi Room on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 from 2:00 – 6:30 p.m.  Everyone is welcome and please bring your health card.

Partnership

Fanshawe College is offering a dual credit program at the West Huron Care Centre from October 29 – December 17, 2018.  This is an exciting opportunity to promote the healthcare sector.

Announcement

We are pleased to announce that Sherri Hayter, Nurse Practitioner joined our team on September 24, 2018.  The opporunity to have a Nurse Practitioner is made possible through an initiative by the South West LHIN.  Sherri is onsite Monday mornings, Wednesdays and Thursdays and has been a welcome enhancement to our care team.

Partnership with Fanshawe College

A dual credit program is being offered onsite for post secondary students from the Avon Maitland and Huron Perth Catholic Boards.  Students will be onsite for full days on Tuesdays during the months of October, November and December.

We publicly recognize donations of $500.00 or more and donations are used to enhance Resident Care, honour or recognize a loved one, or make a difference in the community.

News Briefs from the August 2018 Blue Water Rest Home Board Meeting…

Blue Water Rest Home has committed to supporting the Centre for Learning and Employment in their “Reach for Success” program.  This program is a training opportunity for ages 15-30.  It is a paid 4 week directed training and an 8 week placement for individuals that are interested in becoming a Personal Support Worker, Developmental Service Worker or a Food Service Worker.  This is an exciting opportunity for people interested in working in the healthcare sector.

Administrators from the Huron and Perth Not-For-Profit Long-Term Care Homes have a meeting scheduled with MPPs from Huron and Perth on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 to move forward advocacy efforts for increased staffing. 

Hearing Testing clinics will be held quarterly at the Blue Water Area Family Health Team in partnership with Sound Therapy.  They will begin in October and any senior in the Zurich and surrounding area is welcome!

News Briefs from the June 2018 Blue Water Rest Home Board Meeting…

New Attending Physician – effective July 1, 2018, Dr. Michael Hammond is joining the Attending Physician group at Blue Water Rest Home and will roster ten residents.  

Dr. O’Connor is retiring from his community practice at the Grand Bend Area Community Health Centre at the end of June but we are pleased that he is continuing as the Medical Director at Blue Water Rest Home.

On April 11, 2018, Blue Water Rest Home and Alzheimers Society of Huron County partnered to deliver a research based play called I’m Still Here.  There were 144 guests attend plus students and feedback from the event was positive.  Special thank you to everyone for their in kind donations.

End of Life Volunteers
Two new volunteers have generously offered their time to sit with residents during end of life by providing one-to-one companion support.  Thank you for caring.

Board Announcement
It is with mixed emotions we announce Doug McBeath retired from the Blue Water Rest Home Board of Directors effective March 7, 2018.  Doug represented the Zurich Chamber of Commerce since 2007 and served as Chair and Vice Chair during this time.  We will miss Doug’s contributions he made over the past eleven years.  Colin Haskett has been appointed by the chamber and was welcomed at the 53rd Annual Annual General Meeting on March 7, 2018.

We are pleased to announce that Kendal Schlosser, Nurse Practitioner joined our team on January 3, 2018.  She was hired through an initiative funded by the Ministry of Health and we share Kendal with Exeter Villa.  She has been a welcome enhancement to the care team and our Medical Director and Attending Physician appreciate the additional onsite medical support.

News Briefs from the January 2017 Blue Water Rest Home Board Meeting…

Blue Water Rest Home’s 53rd Annual General Meeting is being held at the West Huron Care Centre on Wednesday, March 7th, 2018 at 7:30 p.m.  Invocation is being provided by Pastor John Tremulak from Zion Lutheran Church. 

Since 2007, Blue Water Rest Home has held an Angel Tree Memorial Service on the third Sunday of November.  The Board of Directors made a motion at January 17, 2018 meeting to stop holding the service because of low attendance and participation in the program.
